Background The Australian Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has released a Stakeholder Information Kit for health professionals about Medicare Mental Health Check In — a new free, confidential online service launched in June 2026. It provides early intervention support for mild mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety, and low mood using evidence-based Low-intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LiCBT).
Service Overview Users aged 16+ in Australia can access the service independently via online tools or with optional telehealth guidance from qualified mental health practitioners (counsellors, social workers, psychologists, etc.). No diagnosis or GP referral is required. The service is not suitable for moderate/severe conditions or crises and forms part of broader Medicare Mental Health offerings (website, phone service, Centres, and Kids Hubs). It meets national digital mental health standards with data stored securely in Australia.
Key Benefits Helps users manage thoughts, feelings, and behaviours through skills like facing fears, lifting mood, managing worries, problem-solving, improving sleep, and balanced thinking.
Resources for Professionals The kit includes a website/newsletter article, health professional and consumer fact sheets, clinic posters, videos (including GP explainer and animated), a multicultural consultation guide, and an overview of Medicare Mental Health services. Social media posts are provided for health professionals and consumers. Translated materials are available in 10 languages.
