Autism has gained prominence in recent years, with increased awareness of its presentations,and its significance across the life cycle.
These two webinars will be of great relevance to all psychiatrists and psychiatric registrars.

Dr Jennifer Harrison is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist working as a Neuro-psychiatrist with children and youth, 0-25 years, presenting to a multidisciplinary team at Alfred Health, in Melbourne, with Neuro-diversity and Complex Needs.
She is also an accomplished, and internationally published, Australian poet
Dr Pia Brous will chair the Webinars.
Webinar Series
Overview of Autism: Language and Social construction, and Contemporary perspectives in psychiatric diagnosis and complexity.
Presented on the 25th July at 7:30pm
Participants will:
- Become aware that autism is a changing field, which is relevant across the life cycle, and can range in severity;
- Learn about social construction and capacities, and language understanding and usage, in autism;
- Understand contemporary perspectives in psychiatric diagnosis, in autism;
- Appreciate the arrays of human complexities seen with autism;
- Increase knowledge about services and resources, eg the NDIS.
Autism and Concurring conditions: Diagnostic overshadowing, with reference to trauma, attachment and other psychiatric disorders
Presented on the 22nd Aug at 7:30pm.
Participants will:
- Learn about diagnostic overshadowing and its relevance in autism;
- Increase awareness that other considerations are required in some presentations of autism, ( eg ID);
- Understand the possible roles of trauma, and of attachment, in autism;
- Appreciate when other psychiatric diagnoses require consideration.
Autism for Psychiatrists: Controversies in Conceptualisation and Treatment
Presented on the 10th Oct at 7:30pm AEDT.
This seminar will examine policies and strategies in the field, both historic and current, and will particularly emphasise the treatment approaches that are recommended both now and for the future. The talk will cover:
- Concepts in the field. What you will learn: Current and historic conceptualisations of autism. Psychodynamic and neurodevelopmental understandings will be covered along with significant policy directions
- The main controversies that affect psychiatric practice. What you will learn: Issues regarding restrictive practice, research directions, and lived experience perspectives.
- Recommended approaches to management and treatment of autism. What you will learn: Recommended pharmacological, psychological and social management strategies.
- Future directions. What you will learn: Innovations in service delivery.
CPD Credit
The webinars will run for 1.5 hours, including 20 minutes for questions. They can be used to claim CME and CPD credits.
